Introduction

As part of Pride Month, we had the privilege of sitting down with Armis President, Brian Gumbel, to delve into his personal journey as an openly out leader, the significance of fostering an inclusive work culture, and valuable insights for employees and employers on embracing diversity. In this enlightening conversation, Brian shares his experiences, challenges, and recommendations, highlighting the importance of authenticity in every aspect of our lives.

Q1: What Does Pride Month Mean to You?

Pride Month holds deep personal significance for me as an openly out leader. It encompasses my own journey of self-acceptance and the importance of feeling comfortable being true to ourselves, both personally and in the workplace. It can be an incredibly challenging process for anyone to navigate. My belief is that we should all be able to live authentically, without the need to switch hats between our personal and professional lives. Embracing our true selves opens doors to new opportunities, happiness, and deeper connections with colleagues, customers, partners, and friends. However, I recognize that this journey is often difficult for many individuals, and it is essential to foster a culture where diversity is embraced and supported by all organizations.

Q2: What Can Organizations do to Help Individuals Show Up Authentically in the Workplace?

Creating an environment where people can show up authentically begins with acknowledging that it’s a natural part of life. Rather than making a big deal out of it, organizations should support and embrace individuals for who they are. This can be achieved through open discussions, creating support groups, and amplifying the voices of employees who need assistance in specific areas. It’s important to remember that diversity and inclusion extends beyond Pride Month and June; there are various other occasions throughout the year to promote and support diversity.

Q3: How Can Colleagues in the Workplace be More Accommodating and Supportive?

Approaching diversity can be challenging for individuals who lack personal experiences or relationships with people from different backgrounds. In such cases, seeking guidance from leaders who have experience or turning to available resources can be beneficial. Additionally, reaching out to diverse colleagues within the company can provide insights and support. Every person is unique, so it’s crucial to approach these conversations with care and respect, avoiding pushing anyone to share more than they’re comfortable with. Personally, I’m always delighted when someone asks for advice, and I’ve been fortunate to help friends navigate this journey and support them in their roles as employers.

Q4: Are There Any Organizations You Would Recommend for Guidance?

One organization that comes to mind is Out Leadership. Their website provides a wealth of knowledge, even if you’re not a member of the organization. It can steer individuals in the right direction and serve as a valuable resource for those seeking guidance on workplace diversity and inclusion.

Q5: What Words of Wisdom Can You Share About Raising Awareness of Diversity and Inclusion?

Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” This really resonates with me because as we’ve discussed, I fully believe the only way to be true to yourself is to live in authenticity. I’m really hoping that by encouraging everyone to take these small steps today we will see a shift in acceptance. Speaking openly and honestly with one another can inspire confidence, create awareness, and pave the way for progress. Remember, everyone can engage in meaningful conversations that contribute to a more inclusive future, just by being their true self.

In this inspiring conversation with Brian Gumbel, we explored the significance of Pride Month and the need for inclusive work cultures. By embracing authenticity, supporting individuals, and engaging in conversations, organizations and individuals can foster diversity and inclusion, creating a more equitable and welcoming environment for everyone. Let us strive to build a world where individuals can show up as their authentic selves, not just during Pride Month, but every day of the year. Together, we can make a difference and inspire positive change.
